MGMT are getting even weirder on their synth-heavy third album, tentatively due out in June. Instead of using their live band, as they did on Congratulations, the core duo recorded alone, cherry-picking the best parts of their free-form jams to construct tracks that reflect the Aphex Twin and house records they’ve been listening to lately. Says Ben Goldwasser, “We’re not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it.”

- Ben & Andrew are definitely recording alone: “Instead of using their live band, as they did on Congratulations, the core duo recorded alone.”
- There has been a lot of improvising and jam sessions.
- They’ve been picking out pieces of those jam sessions to form some of their new songs.
- The new tracks will reflect Aphex Twin and house music—so lots of synths and electronic sounds.
- It’s going to be weird. “We’re not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it.” Also, “the recording process was really strange.”
- There is a track called “Mystery Disease.”
- “Alien Days” is “about the feeling when a parasitic alien is in your head, controlling things.” (Please refer to #5.)
- They recorded a cover of Faine Jade’s “Introspection”—unclear if it’ll be on the album.
- We’re maybe possibly sort of kind of going to get it in June.
