wild-eyed-kid:

I was lucky enough to get the video before it got deleted, so if you missed it, Here’s Andrew speaking about Of Montreal.

Interviewer: So, I noticed a couple years ago when the video for "Madder Red" came out it was pretty similar to MGMT's "Congratulations" video.
Chris: Ours came out first.
Interviewer: So, do you think there was some sort of...
Chris: Zeitgeist?
Interviewer: Involving rubbery, 1980s-looking creatures and the people who fall in love with them, and then they fall apart, and it's sad?
Ira: I think it's corporate espionage. They were following their little creature like it was guiding them through the desert.
Chris: I can guarantee that theirs cost a lot more and looked a lot worse.
Interviewer: I think theirs is uglier in a way... well, they're both pretty ugly. Kirsten Bell was in it?
Anand: We get the pretty lady! We got the pretty lady, her name is Andrew Vanwyngarden!

Interviewer: First time you bought a band t-shirt?
Ben: Ahhh I think mine was at a Sonic Youth show.
Andrew: Mine was at The Cranberries.
Interviewer: What? Oh wait aren't there girls in that band?
Andrew: The Cranberries. Aren't they from... Ireland? You know like Zombie. You know, I saw them when I was like 12 or something.

Vampire Weekend likes MGMT

Interviewer: You played Coachella this year. Did you see anyone while you were there?
Ezra: I saw MGMT
Interviewer: How were they?
Ezra: I thought they were really good.
Interviewer: Did they do their psychedelic, 20 minute song? That just goes on forever?
Chris: Metanoia?
Ezra: No, they didn't.
Interviewer: Oh they played the hits.
Ezra: Well....
Rostam: Did they play Siberian Breaks?
Ezra: I don't think they played that song. They played a lot of stuff from their new album though, which was cool, cause I hadn't seen any of those songs live.
EVB: While we're on the subject, do you have any particular fetish?
BEN: I don't know, I'm pretty boring in the sack [laughs].
EVB: Do you believe sexuality is fluid? If so which fluid best describes your sexuality?
BEN: [laughs] Yes, I believe it's fluid, and I would say these days it's kind of like a fruity, strawberry, champagne drink. With a lot of Vodka in it.

On where the Title Congratulations came from

Interviewer: Did the title of that album come from that song or you already had the title?
Andrew: No uh came up with the title when we were writing the first album...while we were demoing for the first album. I don't remember exactly.
Ben: I think it was inspired by a hangover.
Andrew: Probably a hangover, Probably bagels too. We ate sooo many bagels while we were making the first album.
Matt: I thought you said it was from like a t-shirt you wanted to make?
Andrew: Yeah I wanted to make a t-shirt that said "congratulations on being hung over", cause I was hungover a lot and I always thought I needed some reward on making it through it. You know?

MGMT on going to Wesleyan

Ben: I don't know I tried to figure out something that would actually turned into something more career...you know as far as studying and all that. You know I did pretty well in school but kinda ended up that I had more music credits then anything else and I didn't really want to be a musician but um decided majoring in music would be the best thing.
Andrew: (laughing) You really shouldn't admit that.
Ben: (laughs)
Interview: What was it like for you Andrew?
Andrew: College? Oh it was a blast man! Awesome! Um I don't know I made good grades. I learned a lot of stuff...forgot most of it and ummmm but I had lasting friendship with Mr. Goldwasser and Mr. Berman and others and I uh don't have any regrets about it. I think sometimes i'm like man I wish I would have not just... you know done the least I could do to make a decent grade..you know forgotten... in and out the other ear. (Andrew's voice gets deeper) But its the stuff thats not in the books that really is more important.
Interviewer: What do you think of mainstream music that's coming out right now?
Ben: I think there's some good producers out there. But the musicians…
Andrew: For a while I'd attempt to sing the songs that were on the radio, but I can't anymore. There's just no originality that happens.
Ben: I read this thing that Wilco wrote about how record companies are getting pissed off at people for not actually buying CDs. And then they keep putting out an increasingly inferior product. I kind of agree with that.
Interviewer: Do you think that money and fame are corrupting the music industry?
Ben: No, I think that money and fame are what allow the music industry to thrive.
Andrew: I think that money is the music industry.
Andrew: He was wearing a very very short viking skirt and he was uh.. admiral.
Tony Hawk: Goin' commando?
Andrew: Commando, there you go.
Ben: *Laughs* Admiral?!

Intervew with Andrew

geekinfasho:

What is your favorite vegetable?
Ah, I love vegetables, I love cabbage, carrots and grilled asparagus.

What is your zodiac sign? Do you believe that?
I’m Aquarius, but I still don’t know whether I believe in it or not haha.

If you were on a desert island and your best friend was dead-
Oh!
He’s dead? This is a very, very sad story

Yes, he’s dead, would you eat a bit of them to survive?
Yes, haha, I think my friend would like that.

Then that would be cannibalism
Mm, no problem.

How much would you eat?
I think it depends on the friend, but I know that I would never eat the brain, that would be bad idea.

What if by eating the brain, it merged all his knowledge with yours
I think that they have tried that before, in ancient times, but it didn’t work.
But if you want me to, I can try. If I were to do it, I would do it with a cup of good coffee, because I love coffee.

What was the last CD you bought?
CD?
Mm, I’ve definitely downloaded some illegal things lately, hahaha

Illegal, huh?
Hahaha yes.
I’m not sure why I’m smiling. But the last CD was, what was it I bought? Oh! I bought a very good vinyl collection of Faust The Faust Tapes called. It’s really good.

What is your biggest musical influence?
We have many, and I dont think there’s specific band that is the greater influence, but I’m definitely influenced by Arthur Lee of Love, the 60s band, and I think Suicide, Alan Vega and Martin Rev are in my top two.

Interviewer: What was the last thing you dreamed?
Andrew: Yesterday I went to bed very late, and when that happens I can not remember my dreams. Before that I had one where it crossed a large table with, I think, Matt, who was there and had a bowl of cauliflower and other vegetables, all very good and we ate them. I enjoyed very much.
Interviewer: Whats your favorite vegetable?
Andrew: Ah, I love vegetables, I love cabbage, carrots and grilled asparagus.
Interviewer: I heard the contract was big for virtually a not-so-known band.
Ben: Yeah I really don't know why.
Andrew: It's amazing.
Interviewer: It's almost like it happened by accident or...
Andrew: It's like we were fated...to pretend.
